Musée de la Vallée à Saint-Paul
The Valley Museum in Saint-Paul is one of the five «antenna» sites that make up the The Valley Museum of Barcelonnette. It deals with agricultural and craft trades in Ubaye prior to mechanization. Its collections present the tools and gestures that were commonplace from approximately 1800 to 1960. They also depict the conditions of mountain agriculture (how cereals and fodder were produced, how goods were transported across steep slopes, the various itinerant trades (chair-maker, knife grinder, pit sawyer…) and village trades (blacksmith, grain miller, rope-maker, woodworker…) as well as those trades that helped keep busy during the long winter such as the making of fabrics (wool and hemp) that the valley's hawkers would sell down in the valley up until the mid-19th century. Each year, on the first Sunday following August 15th, the museum brings its tools out into the nearby field and the valley's inhabitants bring them back to life demonstrating the various gestures and tricks of the trade. The museum is dedicated to the blacksmith Albert Manuel (1910-1991) who equipped it with scale models and presentation cabinets for tools, which are at the same time both attractive and educational.
