One of France's first rank museums owing to the variety of its collections and its acquisition policy, the Museum of Mediterranean Archeology offers a vast overview of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Egypt From the beginnings of the Ancient Empire to the Copte era, this collection is second only to the Louvre's. It offers a well-rounded vision of art, culture, daily life and funeral rites. The Middle East This collection evokes the beginnings of city life in Mesopotamia from the 4th millennium b.c. onwards. The ceramic items exhibited stand out for their exceptional finesse and quality. The beginnings of written language are illustrated by inscribed bricks and cuneiform tablets. Greece from the Archaic to the Hellenistic Major currents in the minor arts are represented from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic Period through works of unique quality such as the Minoan Onoechoe. Etruria and Rome Etruscan civilization is represented by a very interesting collection of bucchero nero, a typical ceramic, les funerary urns and an assortment of bronze objects. Objects from the Roman period illustrate the minor arts: sculpture, glasswork, bronze... Protohistory The objects originate from various Celto-Ligurian sites spanning a radius of 30 kilometers around Marseilles. Exhibited in chronological and geographical order as well as according to specific themes, they illustrate the evolution of village communities beginning in the 5th century b.c.
