The Marseille History Museum
Reopened in 2013, the Marseille History Museum has been constructed around the Bourse archaeological site, close to the Vieux-Port, to create a link beetween it and the city.
This modern museum, combining art and technology, uses multimedia systems to immerse in the living history of Marseille, the oldest city of France.
The Marseille History Museum is spread over 3 levels:
- Antiquity and Middle Ages (Garden Level)
- Modern Age (Level 1)
- Contemporary (Lower ground floor)
It is divided into 13 chronological and geographical sequences, explained by cartels along the visit tour. Cartels contain : a map, a historic frame, a chronology of the events.
The visit starts from the Cosquer Cave, 600 years B.C., and ends with the Marseille of today and tomorrow. It includes objects, films, testimonies of the protagonists and 3 D reconstructions.
Before reaching the « Antiquity » collections, turning left side, the movie " Marseille before Marseille " in the projection room introduces the story of the city.
At the bottom of the hall there is the Temporary Exhibitions Room.
For the young public, the 12 stops called " Les Escales de l'histoire" propose a learning game : children can deepen some subjects, having fun.
The visit tour is suitable to all the public.
Free audioguides are available to visitors in French, English and Italian.
